From the park to the concert hall, our\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">friend Nelson Brill is always on the hunt for great sound.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">In this blog, Brill\u00a0heads to The Somerville Theatre to see The Wood Brothers perform their <\/span><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">carousing vaudeville and fiery rock n\u2019 roll&#8221; set.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>CONCERT GLIMPSE: THE WOOD BROTHERS- PRIMED FOR ADVENTURE<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By Nelson Brill<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FEBRUARY 12, 2017<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/bostonconcertreviews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/images-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Somerville Theatre (located in the heart of Davis Square in Somerville, MA.) opened its doors on May 11, 1914 and the first acts that graced its stage that night were a vaudeville act; a \u201csinging skit\u201d and a \u201ccomedy playlet\u201d. (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.somervilletheatre.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">www.somervilletheatre.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). One hundred years later, the Somerville Theatre is still going strong.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2692\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/bostonconcertreviews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/somervillemaintheatre-300x164.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"164\" \/><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">somervilletheatre.com<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On February 8 and 9th, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wood Brothers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewoodbros.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">www.thewoodbros.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) came into town to deliver their own version of carousing vaudeville and fiery rock n\u2019 roll on the Somerville Theatre\u2019s historic stage to the delight of their rollicking, dancing audiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wood Brothers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u201cthe Brothers\u201d) love to harken back to the days of original vaudeville and folk acts. Midway through their performance on February 8th, the Brothers (Chris Wood on bass, vocals and harmonica; Oliver Wood on vocals and guitar and Jano Rix on keyboards, vocals and everything percussive) dimmed the Somerville Theatre house lights, turned off all stage microphones and gathered in a semi-circle around a single antique microphone (which they call their \u201cBig Mic\u201d). Basking in this autumnal glow, the Brothers performed the filigree title track from their 2013 recording, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Muse <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[Southern Ground Artists] and their classic, \u201cPostcards From Hell,\u201d (a tribute this evening to the late Levon Helm) in stately sweet harmonies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2686 aligncenter\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/bostonconcertreviews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/91ntLANHT7L._SY355_-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The unkempt beauty of these stark ballads highlighted the down-home feel of this great band and their consummate musicianship. Each number combined far-ranging influences such as a brush with Calypso beats (in Chris Wood\u2019s pumping bass solo) to Oliver Wood\u2019s country vocal touches.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2691\" src=\"http:\/\/bostonconcertreviews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/images.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rubatophoto.com<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2693\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/bostonconcertreviews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Unknown-300x168.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">npr.com<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other sweetly grooving numbers at this concert included the opening \u201cTwo Places\u201d and \u201cTouch of Your Hand\u201d (both taken from the Brother\u2019s excellent 2015 recording, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paradise <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[Honey Jar Records]), with Oliver\u2019s lithe and clear vocals shimmying alongside Chris\u2019s pungent bass and Rix\u2019s keyboard off-kilter splashes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2685\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/bostonconcertreviews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/81SeBAil1hL._SY355_-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Brothers\u2019 common pulsing sway also highlighted their sardonic \u201cAmerican Heartache\u201d with the rasp of Chris\u2019 harmonica cutting deep into the trio\u2019s soaring harmonies that combusted in thunderous drum and snarling electric guitar hits.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2689\" src=\"http:\/\/bostonconcertreviews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/images-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"284\" height=\"177\" \/><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lagunitas.com<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Betwixt and between these grooving ballads and blues, The Brothers took off on a raucous ride through their arsenal of full tilt rock n\u2019 roll sending their lyrics (both comic and cutting) soaring on ripped-up guitar chords and huge bass pelts. Leave it to The Brothers to come up with lyrics such as: \u201cYou put your lips in the wind and hope for some kisses back\u201d or \u201cHe hails from the great state of confusion and he now pulls a push broom at the inconvenience store.\u201d The latter lyric is taken from their soaring \u201cSinging To Strangers\u201d that crushed with gleeful guitar heat and was partnered with \u201cSnake Eyes\u201d (both numbers found in spirited versions on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paradise<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) that had Chris Wood dancing in playful revel: he pounded his exuberant bass strings into a frenzy and then, (holding onto the very tip of his huge acoustic bass) he shimmied across the stage to finally fall on his knees to the blasts of Rix\u2019s gut-thumping drums.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2696\" src=\"http:\/\/bostonconcertreviews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/images-5.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"189\" \/><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">musicmarauders.com<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The frolic continued with blazing harp and bass propelling the boogie of \u201cHoney Jar\u201d as Oliver Wood sang in his wonderfully dry, expressive and thin-as-a-reed vocals. This careening number was partnered with the exuberant \u201cOne More Day,\u201d a song that was first recorded on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Brothers <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2006 recording, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ways Not To Lose <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[Blue Note]. (For audiophiles, I recommend <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ways Not To Lose <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as The Brothers\u2019 most natural sounding recording to date, because it records them in an intimate session with natural tones and textures to their beguiling instrumental and vocal interplay, with the spirited drummer Kenny Wollesen in the creative mix).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2684\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/bostonconcertreviews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/51VKgb-5RML._SY355_-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne More Day\u201d took on a furious pace and blistering heat at this concert as Oliver took up his electric slide guitar with fervent swipes of crushing and blurred high notes followed by Rix\u2019s drum solo that was fit for a boisterous New Orleans \u201cSecond Line\u201d parade. Appropriately, this heated jam ended with a spontaneous outburst of a warped version of \u201cThe Saints Go Marching In.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2690\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/bostonconcertreviews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/images-3-300x158.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" \/><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">jambase.com<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the final moments of this raw funk fest, The Brothers came full circle to revisit the glory of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Band, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(the Brothers\u2019 upcoming release will be a performance recorded at Levon Helm\u2019s Barn) and lifted the 100 year-old roof of the Somerville Theatre with a soaring version of The Band\u2019s \u201cOphelia\u201d.
